Learn about my journey, passion for art, and the story behind my work.
Chancellor Ahaghotu’s journey to becoming a rising star in the art world is one of resilience, passion, and unwavering determination. Born and raised in Nigeria, Chancellor loved drawing caricatures and sketches as a child. However, with limited art opportunities in his community, his talents went largely unsupported. Instead, he was steered toward science classes—an academic path that felt alien and unfulfilling to him. Struggling academically, he faced repeated failures, deepening his feelings of despair and plunging him into depression.
After graduating from secondary school, a pivotal encounter changed his life’s trajectory. Chancellor’s father introduced him to a professional artist, the CEO of 6th Finger Creation. Eager to pursue his passion for painting despite having no prior experience, Chancellor sought the artist’s guidance. He was advised to first hone his drawing skills to build a foundation in understanding values. With limited resources, he crafted his first portrait—a striking charcoal drawing of his aunt—using raw charcoal from their outdoor kitchen and a 2B pencil. Unfortunately, the lessons were cut short following the passing of his mentor’s father, but the spark of artistic potential had already ignited.
In an effort to follow societal expectations, Chancellor enrolled in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), to study Food Science and Technology. However, the mental and emotional toll of pursuing a path so far from his passion became unbearable. By his second year, he made the difficult decision to drop out, knowing it would upset his family. He began to focus on personal artistic development, creating detailed portraits of loved ones and public figures. His skills improved rapidly, and he began receiving commissions, leading him to explore painting.
In 2021, a distant relative living in the United States discovered Chancellor’s work. Recognizing his immense potential, she commissioned several pieces and eventually brought him to the U.S., declaring, “Your talents shouldn’t be wasted.” In 2022, Chancellor enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where his artistic journey flourished. SCAD introduced him to advanced painting techniques, color theory, and the vast possibilities of a professional art career.
During his freshman year, Chancellor gained recognition for his 3D design project, Captain Africa, a circular shield that symbolized strength and cultural pride. The project garnered attention when it was showcased at a SCAD fashion event, catching the eye of Bishop Dr. Gerard A. Ancrum. He invited Chancellor to exhibit the piece in The Gerard Ancrum Experience: from the Royal Couture from Around the Globe in summer 2023.
In his sophomore year, Chancellor achieved a monumental milestone by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest painting marathon—a feat that not only showcased his dedication but also placed him on the global stage. Now a junior at SCAD, Chancellor has temporarily taken a leave of absence due to mental challenges. However, he views this time as an opportunity to focus on an upcoming project he describes as his most ambitious yet. Chancellor’s journey reflects the triumph of passion over adversity. From sketching with limited tools in Nigeria to breaking records and inspiring others through his work, Chancellor Ahaghotu is a testament to the power of perseverance and vision. As he often says, “I’m only just getting started.” The art world awaits his next big move—stay tuned.
The Guinness World Records has officially certified Chancellor Ahaghotu as an Amazing Artist after breaking a decade old-record for The Longest Painting Marathon. From 26 to 30 October 2023, Chancellor Ahaghotu Painted for 100 consecutive hours creating a total 106 paintings in Atlanta, Georgia.
